Australasian Sonographers Day

Medical ultrasound includes diagnostic techniques (mainly imaging techniques) using ultrasound, as well as therapeutic applications of ultrasound. In diagnosis, it is used to create an image of internal body structures such as tendons, muscles, joints, blood vessels, and internal organs, to measure some characteristics (e.g. distances and velocities) or to generate an informative audible sound. The usage of ultrasound to produce visual images for medicine is called medical ultrasonography or simply sonography, or echography.

A sonographer is an allied healthcare professional who specializes in the use of ultrasonic imaging devices to produce diagnostic images, scans, videos or three-dimensional volumes of anatomy and diagnostic data.

OCTOBER is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, a globally observed initiative started by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography in the US to increase awareness of sonography and the role of sonographers. In Australia, Ultrasound Specialists Day is on October 27. The Australasian Sonographers Association established the day in 2018, and health departments try to organize it as a day to recognize ultrasound specialists for their important role in the medical community as ultrasound experts.
