5 November - World Clown Day
The origin of clowns as we know them today dates back to the 16th century in Italy and England. William Shakespeare was the first to use the word “clown” to refer to the funny and awkward characters that appeared in his plays. In 1768 Philip Astley created the first circus in history, and one of the acts featured a clown who could not get on a horse. Although this is a fact that many people do not know, the clown profession is far from recent. It is estimated that was born 4,000 years ago in China by the hand of Yusze, a jester who worked in the court of Emperor Chiu Shih huang-ti.
The fact that Clown Day is celebrated on November 5 is not pure chance. This date was chosen in honor of Emilio Alberto Aragón, better known as Miliki. The humorist was born in Carmona (Seville) on November 4, 1929. He became known as a member of ‘Los Payasos de la Tele’ along with Gaby and Fofó.
