Since 1972, many countries have celebrated International Day for the Preservation of Nature every October 18.
The purpose of this date is to emphasize the importance of caring for nature and biodiversity, in addition to seeking alternatives that allow the development of humanity in balance with the rest of the planet's species.
The origin of this celebration is a letter that the Argentine general and former president Juan Domingo Perón wrote, during his exile in Spain, to the then Secretary General of the United Nations, Kurt Waldheim. In the epistle, Perón warned of the "suicidal march that humanity has undertaken through environmental pollution" and called for everything possible to be done to reverse this situation.
The United Nations Organization decided to adopt this proposal to encourage responsibility for the environment, especially for the protection and care of natural spaces with unique flora, fauna and/or landscape values.
