The Paraguayan Librarian's Day is celebrated on October 16, in homage to José Gabriel Benítez, who was appointed the first Paraguayan librarian, with salary, in the year 1840. José Gabriel Benítez was appointed librarian of the National Library, founded by Dr. José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia. The date was taken by the Asociación de Bibliotecarios del Paraguay that since 1961 started the celebration of the Paraguayan Librarian's Day. On January 16, Paraguay celebrates the Day of the Author, in recognition of José Gabriel Benítez, the first author in the country since José Gabriel Benítez was chosen and paid to run the National Library, built by Mr. José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia. The Paraguayan Academy of Arts and Sciences celebrated the event and since 1961 has been celebrating, on that day, Paraguayan Artists' Day.
On July 20, 1974, the first graduates of the School of Library Science of the National University of Asuncion formed the Association of Graduate Librarians of Paraguay - Abigrap, to defend and strengthen the work of Paraguayan librarians.
