World Drowning Prevention Day, proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly resolution A/RES/75/273, entitled "Global Drowning Prevention", April 2021, is observed annually on 25 July. This global advocacy event is an occasion to highlight the tragic and profound consequences of drowning for families and communities, and to offer life-saving solutions to prevent drowning.
An estimated 236,000 people drown each year, and drowning is among the top ten leading causes of death for children and young people aged 1-24 years. In low- and middle-income countries, more than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells, and domestic water storage tanks, and children and adolescents in rural areas are disproportionately affected.
