The first known battery dates back 2000 years, could produce up to 2 volts, and its use was unknown. A clay jar of a prehistoric battery holds an iron rod surrounded by a copper cylinder. When filled with vinegar or electrolytic solution, the jar produces 1.1 to 2 volts.
