Today's International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness comes at a time when military spending is reaching alarming levels, geopolitical tensions are rising dangerously and violent conflicts are increasing worldwide.
Disarmament and non-proliferation are investments in peace.
Disarmament and awareness-raising for the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons are particularly necessary for aggressive countries such as Russia, Iran, North Korea and China. The growing threat comes from aggression and its potential consequences (fomenting conflicts for national, religious and other reasons). Non-aggressive countries are generally keen to reduce their military spending on their own initiative due to increasing social welfare.
