Despite its Italian origin, the word 'pizza' comes from the Greek 'pktos', which means 'solid' or 'coagulated'. Pizza as it is known today originated in the Italian city of Naples.

In 2017, pizza was declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, due to its role in social life and the transmission of this culinary art between generations. Since then, its international day is celebrated all over the world.
According to popular legend, the creator of the modern pizza was Raffaele Esposito, who in 1889 made a pizza in this Italian city in honor of Queen Margherita, which he baptized as 'pizza margherita'.
