A caregiver is a person who provides the support required to care for another person who is in a situation of dependency, either temporarily or permanently, to meet their basic needs and contribute to improving their quality of life.
November 5 is the International Day of Caregivers and was first celebrated on November 5, 2014, the date on which the United Nations (UN) General Assembly declared it as such.
On November 5, a well-deserved tribute is paid to those people who are dedicated to the care of the elderly or people in a situation of dependency.
A professional or formal caregiver is a person who provides a paid home care and assistance service, which involves housework and nursing assistance. He or she applies theoretical and practical knowledge to support and accompany the daily routine, as well as to meet the demands and requirements of the person being cared for.
In contrast, the family caregiver is exercised by a member of the family group, a friend or acquaintance of the person being cared for. They have no formal training, do not receive any remuneration and do not have a defined schedule for caregiving.
