In Argentina, the date commemorates the death of Dr. Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), French chemist and bacteriologist, founder of microbiology and pioneer of modern medicine. In December 1986, the Argentine Association of Microbiology decided that this date should be celebrated in Argentina.
Microbiologists study the biology and chemistry of microbes. They apply their knowledge to solve problems in areas such as agriculture, food production, the water industry, medicine and pharmaceuticals, and are responsible for managing and protecting the environment.
Microbiologists play a very important role in health care. In fact, the specialty of Microbiology and Parasitology, which can be accessed through a degree in Medicine, Pharmacy, Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry, studies the microorganisms that interrelate with humans and nature and that sometimes result in an infectious disease.
