San Pedro Sacatepéquez, San Marcos is a municipality in the department of San Marcos, in the Republic of Guatemala. The municipality is of second category and has a city that is the municipal seat of San Pedro Sacatepéquez. Its villages are: Cantel, Corral Grande, Chamac, Champollap, Chim, El Cedro, El Tablero, La Grandeza, Mavil, Piedra Grande, Provincia Chiquita, Sacuchum, San Andrés Chapil, San José Cabén, San Pedro Petz, Santa Teresa, La Cuchilla and San Francisco Soché; it also has sixty-seven hamlets in the rural area. In addition to Spanish, the indigenous language Mam is spoken.
The municipality's economy is based on agriculture, livestock, industry - mainly the manufacture of musical instruments, jewelry, leather products and bakery - and handicrafts. Among the latter are the production of wool sweaters, typical cotton fabrics, basketry, rockets, clay tiles and bricks, and leather goods.
Among its natural attractions are the waterfalls of Los Tres Chorros, Las Cataratas de Los Chocoyos, and El Agua Tibia. The Agua Tibia, Hondo, Escondido, Santo Domingo and Tres Chorros rivers and the La Ciénaga stream flow through the municipality. The municipality is reached by National Route No. 1.
According to governmental agreement of August 21, 1940 it was agreed to celebrate the titular fair of this municipality during the last week of the month of June, being the main day the 29th, date in which the Catholic Church commemorates the apostles St. Peter and St. Paul. This celebration is known as "Flor de Retana", and as a tradition in this municipality the inhabitants, whether ladinos or mestizos, dress up with the typical costume of San Pedro as a tribute and reverence to the past generations of the municipality.
