This June 30 commemorates the victory of the Liberals, Generals Miguel García Granados and Justo Rufino Barrios, when they triumphantly entered the Guatemalan capital during the revolution against the dictator Vicente Cerna, in 1871.
General Justo Rufino Barrios founded and organized the Guatemalan Army in its beginnings, providing the country with a military academy that trained professional officers. The Polytechnic School was consequently founded in 1873.
