In Brazil, April 25th, the Day of the Brazilian Accountant, was officially established by State Law N° 1989 on May 23rd, 1979.
The Day of the Accountant came about as a tribute to the creation of Brazil's first Accountancy course, instituted on September 22, 1945. At the time, the course, offered at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), was regulated by Decree-Law No. 7,988, signed by President Getúlio Vargas.
Before that, there were already accounting and bookkeeping courses, but at a technical level. Decree-Law 7.988, which provides for the teaching of Economic Sciences and Accounting and Actuarial Sciences, allowed the creation of the first higher education course in the country. Through the text, important points were established, such as: disciplines, duration and enrollment criteria.
