Do we know that a donor saves an average of 3 lives? Or that a person is more likely to need a transplant one day than to be a donor?
Since 1976, French law states that we are all potential organ donors at our death, unless we have expressed our refusal to donate during our lifetime. To find out if such a refusal has been expressed by the deceased, the medical team begins by checking whether the deceased is registered on the national register of refusals. If the deceased is not listed, the medical team questions their family to find out if their loved one had expressed, during their lifetime, their opposition in writing or orally. Moreover, since 2018, the Agence de la biomédecine has chosen to no longer distribute the organ donor card, which could mislead about this law. Yet, nearly 18%1 of French people think it is still necessary...
