Today Shunbun no Hi is a national holiday and the majority of Japanese will have the day off work to celebrate with their families. In the northern hemisphere, the vernal equinox (March) conventionally marks the beginning of spring in most cultures and is considered the start of the New Year in the Assyrian calendar, Hindu, and the Persian or Iranian calendars, while the autumnal equinox (September) marks the beginning of autumn.
Vernal Equinox Day in Japan is normally held on March 20 or March 21 each year. This day marks the start of spring and the end of winter. Before World War II it was called Shunki Koreisai, a Shinto holiday observed to honor past emperors of Japan.
