Day of Pope John Paul II (Dzień Papieża Jana Pawła II) - a Polish holiday celebrated every year on October 16, established by the Seym of the Republic of Poland in tribute to the Polish Pope John Paul II. At the same time, the Catholic Church in Poland celebrates the Papal Day, which falls on the Sunday immediately preceding the anniversary of Karol Wojtyla's election as Pope.
On October 16, 1978, the Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, as the first cardinal from Poland, as well as the first non-Italian bishop of Rome after 455 years, was elected pope and took the name of John Paul II. On October 16, 2002, John Paul II introduced the Mysteries of Light to the rosary.
