The Police Day was established by the Parliament of the Republic of Poland on July 21, 1995. The date, July 24, commemorates the anniversary of the establishment of the State Police in 1919.
As a rule, on the eve of the holiday, the ceremony of awarding decorations and appointments to higher police ranks and higher official positions takes place at the Warsaw Police Headquarters. Decorations and distinctions are awarded, in addition to state decorations, these may include: Crosses of Merit for Bravery, Medals for Long Service, Medals for Merit for the Police and Badges of "Meritorious Police Officer".
The Police Day is also an occasion to lay wreaths and bouquets in front of plaques and monuments dedicated to the memory of those who died on duty.
