Every year on February 25, International Cochlear Implant Day is commemorated as a reminder of the date on which the first implantation was performed in 1957 by French doctors Djourno and Eyrès.
The cochlear implant is a high-tech active implantable medical device consisting of a transducer that transforms acoustic signals into electrical signals that stimulate the auditory nerve. These signals are processed by the different parts that make up the cochlear implant, some of which are placed inside the skull and others on the outside. It helps people to hear and can be used for people who are deaf or very hard of hearing. It is not the same as a hearing aid, as it is surgically implanted and works differently.
