There's a lot of confusion out there about what information architecture is (and isn't).
Web professionals often merge the concepts of information architecture (IA) and site navigation (format, labels, placement). Though IA and navigation are related, and IA certainly informs the user interface, it is important to know the difference. Information architecture is organizing, labeling, prioritizing, and connecting site content so it is (a) easy to use, and (b) easy to find. Many web professionals confuse information architecture with site navigation, technical architecture, and even search engine optimization (SEO).
As information architects, we develop strategies to understand what we are trying to structure. By giving information structure, we learn to understand. We do this to encourage others to explore and understand. By being curious, we recognize our own and others’ discovery strategies.
