Feminist associations have been commemorating the date of December 19 since 2006 in Chile, in honor of Javiera Neira Oportus. On December 19, 2005, after a visit by Javiera Neira Oportus, 6 years old, to her biological father Alfredo Cabrera Opazo, the latter refused to return her to her mother Claudia Neira Oportus. The latter had ended their relationship some time ago, and had been the victim of physical and verbal violence on his part, for which reason Alfredo Cabrera Opazo was forbidden to approach her; however, the court upheld the father's custody rights over his daughter. When Claudia Neira Oportus came to pick up her daughter, Alfredo Cabrera Opazo attacked her, and when Javiera Neira Oportus tried to come between her parents, her father defenestrated her from the seventh floor. Her murder is considered a "femicidal punishment", which occurs when a man, with the aim of harming a woman, kills one of her loved ones.
This date reiterates the commitment to denounce femicides, to seek justice with the maximum penalties, and to ask for the celerity of the police to investigate these crimes.
In 2019, the Chilean Network against Violence against Women reported that femicides make more than 50 victims per year in the country (59 in 2018, 61 until December 19, 2019).
