23 October - Saint Joseph of Sapotlán Day in Mexico
The rich tradition of the feast of St. Joseph of Sapotlán has its roots in the ancient culture of the first inhabitants of the valley in Sapotlán el Grande (Jalisco). A commitment was passed from father to son to celebrate the Day of this patron saint: "it is a given word," which is woven into the symbolic language of this feast day.
Every evening on October 22, about three thousand people gather at the cathedral to renew their grandparents' commitment. It is a night when the men and women of Sapotlan remember and feel why St. Joseph and Sapotlan are so closely linked. Thus, new generations renew the oath their ancestors took in 1747, ratified in 1749, in 1806 and most recently in 1986.
The renewal of the oath is one of the many moments of the festival when it ceases to be just speech and takes the form of dialogue. The writing and the word become part of the wisdom of this city. It is the content of the historical memory of Sapotlan, because "the old word becomes the new.
