The International Gaucher Disease Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of having up-to-date information and knowledge, in order to anticipate diagnoses and avoid erroneous treatments.
Gaucher disease is a rare metabolic disease caused by a deficiency of a protein substance capable of activating a chemical reaction in the body. It is the most common of the lipid deposition diseases, including pathologies such as mucopolysaccharidosis and Fabry. There are 3 types of this disease with different degrees of involvement: type 1, type 2 and type 3.
Type 1, which accounts for 95% of cases, is the chronic, non-neurological form. It is characterized by pain, bone infarcts, osteonecrosis (decreased blood flow in the bones of the joints), decreased platelet count or anemia. Type 2, which appears during the first year of life, is the acute neurological form and can lead to brainstem dysfunction and abnormal organ enlargement. Finally, type 3 is the subacute neurological form and is characterized by progressive encephalopathy (brain dysfunction), movement disorders or epilepsies.
