Ataxia is not a disease in itself, but a characteristic symptom of more than three hundred degenerative processes that course in addition to ataxia many other symptoms (skeletal deformities, heart disease, diplopia, dysarthria, muscular dystonia, diabetes, sensory impairment, lung infections due to choking, lymphomas and leukemias, etc), which vary according to the type of ataxia.
Although the best known and most frequent ataxia is Friedreich's ataxia, there are more than 200 types of ataxia that share a common characteristic: impaired coordination of movements. Although it is an extensive and complex list of ataxia types, they can be classified.
International Ataxia Day is an international effort of organizations around the world that dedicate every September 25 to raise awareness about this condition. It has been celebrated since 2012 and is convened by all those organizations in each country that promote activities and events dedicated to this topic.
