The city that since October 20, 1880 is the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, celebrates today September 29 its founding anniversary, in honor of its patron saint San Miguel Arcángel.
September 29, 1578 is recognized as the day that marks the founding of Tegucigalpa under the name of Real de Minas de San Miguel de Tegucigalpa.
In its beginnings it was populated by a group of Spaniards who were looking for silver veins in the area around 1560, later with the growth of the mining town it was known as Real Villa de San Miguel de Tegucigalpa de Heredia on September 29, 1578 over an old existing indigenous town. At that time the area of Tegucigalpa was a center of mining activity where silver and gold were extracted.
