On September 21, the International Day of Struggle against Monoculture Tree Plantations, organizations, networks and movements celebrate resistance and raise their voices to demand a halt to the expansion of industrial tree plantations.
Such plantations threaten the sovereignty of communities and peoples. The Day was declared in 2004, during a meeting of a community network that fights against industrial tree plantations in Brazil; September 21 was chosen because on that date Brazil celebrates Arbor Day.
Every year, organizations and social movements carry out various actions during the month of September to give visibility to their struggles and denounce the negative impacts of tree plantations on their livelihoods and territories.
