Columbus Day is one of the names given to October 12, the day that commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus to America in 1492. This day is celebrated in most Spanish-speaking countries and in the United States, among other countries. It has several denominations, but with the same objective: to commemorate the "first encounter between two worlds". It is known as Día de la Raza, Día de la Resistencia Indígena, Día de la Hispanidad, Día de la Diversidad Cultural and in Spain specifically as Día de la Hispanidad.
It was created at the beginning of the 20th century, at the initiative of former Spanish minister Faustino Rodríguez-San Pedro. However, since the neoindigenization movements of the late 20th century, this holiday has been criticized because it commemorates the subjugation and elimination of pre-Columbian indigenous peoples and their cultures.
