Saint Domingo de Guzmán (Feast: August 4 and 8) was a Castilian presbyter and Catholic saint, founder of the Order of Preachers, better known as Dominicans. His name appears among the celebrations of the Lutheran Calendar of Saints.
Domingo de Guzmán was born in Caleruega (in the present province of Burgos, Spain) around the year 1170. His parents were the venerable Felix de Guzman and Juana de Aza (commonly called Saint Juana de Aza, beatified in 1828). Domingo had two older brothers, Anthony and Blessed Manes (the latter was one of the first Dominican blessed).
Legend has it that Domingo de Guzman said that he saw Our Lady holding a rosary in her hand and that she taught him to pray it. She instructed him to preach it throughout the world, promising him that many sinners would be converted and obtain abundant graces. The saint arose greatly consoled and burning with zeal for the good of these people, he entered the Cathedral and at that moment the bells rang to gather the inhabitants.
