A canillita is a street vendor of newspapers and magazines, although the word can also be attributed to fixed street stalls. Every November 7, the Day of the Canillita is celebrated throughout the country, a day dedicated to pay tribute to newspaper and magazine vendors.
The origin of this celebration goes back to the city of Buenos Aires and the journalist and playwright Florencio Sánchez, author of the rioplatense play entitled "Canillita", premiered in 1904.
Florencio Sánchez was born on January 17, 1875 in Montevideo. According to IProfesional, at the age of 16 he began a prominent career in journalism which led him to seek new directions in Argentina.
On November 7, 1910 Sánchez died at the age of 35 from pneumonia. It was not until 1947, 37 years later, that the date was established as a tribute to him.
