Chaplains are an integral part of our struggle for freedom and independence. Their role in Ukraine's military history began not only with the beginning of the war in 2014; clergymen accompanied the army throughout the entire process of creating the state. They care for the souls of the soldiers, helping them to remain human and fulfill the noble mission of defending their native land. This ministry has always been a volunteer one.
The first staff positions of military chaplains appeared in 2016, and in November 2021, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On the Service of Military Chaplaincy”. Before that, clergymen worked at the front as volunteers, carrying out pastoral ministry. Today, more than 300 priests of different confessions from 13 religious organizations serve in the army.
Traditionally, Military Chaplain's Day is celebrated in honor of St. Martin the Merciful, Bishop of Tours, who is considered the founder of military chaplaincy and the patron saint of chaplains. Earlier the holiday was celebrated on October 25, but due to Ukraine's transition to the New Julian calendar, the date was shifted to October 12.
Chaplain for a soldier on the front line is a counselor and healer of soul wounds, bringing the soldier closer to God, becoming His messenger. It is not just a title, but a call of the heart.
Since the beginning of the war in the East, many clerics have gone to the front lines to support our fighters. They are mentors who help warriors find the right path in difficult situations.
Chaplains are true knights of the spirit! Their ministry inspires and supports the military, giving them hope and faith in victory.
