Flowers are an important means of attracting pollen substances to plants, and plants need to produce seeds, the reproductive structures that allow seeds to exist for generations. Flowers can also protect growing seeds and successfully pass genetic material to the next generation.

There are more flowers than we can count. China boasts the oldest flower in the world. Known as the Mother of All Flowers, the Archaefructus sinensis is believed to be the world’s oldest flower. Discovered by archaeologists in a fossil back in 2002, it was believed to bloom more than 125 million years ago in China.

Flowering plants all go through the same stages of a life cycle, but the length of time they take varies a lot between species. Some plants go though their complete cycle in a few weeks – others take many years. Annuals are plants that grow from a seed, then flower and make new seeds, then die, all in less than a year.
