The leprechaun, a tiny elf from Irish folklore, is said to love gold coins, shamrocks, rainbows and anything green. According to legend, if a human succeeds in catching one of these little green men, the leprechaun will grant you three wishes, or even give you his pot of gold. Stories say that leprechauns are shoemakers, spending most of their lives fixing and making shoes.
Leprechaun means “small body.” Leprechauns are fairies – magical creatures. There aren't any female leprechauns. There's a leprechaun colony in Portland, Oregon. The modest garden, called Mill Ends Park, became an official city park on St. Patrick’s Day in 1976. Over the years, contributors have added miniature additions like a swimming pool complete with a diving board.
Leprechauns don't actually wear green – one of the biggest myths. Sometimes, leprechauns are red. It is believed that leprechauns are fond of playing tricks on those they meet.
