National Heroes Day in Antigua and Barbuda is celebrated annually on December 9. It is a public holiday commemorating the life of Antigua and Barbuda's first Prime Minister, the Honorable Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr. also known as Papa Bird.
The Most Exalted Order of the National Hero is an order of knighthood of Antigua and Barbuda that recognizes pre-eminently distinguished service to Antigua and Barbuda or to humanity in general. This Order was established and constituted by the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda by virtue of the National Honors Act of 1998, which received the Royal Assent of the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda on December 31, 1998.
