More than five centuries after the discovery of America, October 12 is commemorated as the Day of the Race in memory of the struggle between the indigenous people and the Spanish colonizers in 1492, after the Genoese sailor Christopher Columbus discovered the New World.
In Venezuela the origin of this commemoration can be found in 2002, when it was decreed by the National Government as a way to vindicate and honor the resistance of the Native Americans against the conquerors.
