Leif Erikson Day is celebrated on October 9th each year in honor of Leif Erikson who is believed to be the first explorer to set foot in North America. Leif Erikson was a Norse explorer, born just before 1000 A.D. (in approximately 960), and the second son of Erik the Red.
The voyage of Leif Erikson and his valiant crew — bold explorers from Scandinavia, believed to have been the first Europeans to reach the shores of North America — has been a source of inspiration to Nordic Americans for generations.
On Leif Erikson Day, "hinga-dinga-durgen" is said and a Viking helmet and large red beard are worn. The phrase “hinga dinga durgen” is used to imitate the general sound of the Scandinavian languages. It was first used in the Spongebob Squarepants episode “Leif Erikson Day.”
Leif Erikson Day doesn't get as much recognition because it's overshadowed by Monday's Columbus Day—which, unlike Erikson's day, is a federal holiday, meaning government employees get off work, as do many students and private-sector workers.
