The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, through Ministerial Agreement No. 3401 of July 24, 1997, designated July 26 as "Ecuadorian Sports Day". With this initiative, the Ministry of Sports seeks to make physical activity an integral part of citizens' education.
During the day, the practice of recreational sports activities will be promoted to improve the quality of life and promote the proper use of free time. The country will also remember the gold medal won by Jefferson Perez in the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
Among the activities to be developed are the Athletic Festival - 3 km. walk for all the provincial capitals; the Neighborhood Sports Games in all the National Police Sub-circuits; and the inter-university, educational system and national sports system contest of choreographies alluding to the tricolor sport.
