It is a national holiday for engineers from all over the country, established by Government Decision 525/2000. On the occasion of 14 September, the Ministry of National Education, the Academy of Technical Sciences and the professional associations of engineers in Romania may hold symbolic scientific events to mark this event.
The oldest engineering school in Romania is the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. Its foundation is closely linked to Gheorghe Lazăr, the founder of the first higher technical school taught in Romanian, in 1818, at the Monastery of Saint Sava in Bucharest, reorganised in 1832 into the College of Saint Sava.
The General Association of Romanian Engineers (AGIR) re-emerged on the Romanian civil society scene after December 1989 and was legally recognised on 13 January 1990. AGIR is a member of the World Federation of National Engineering Organisations (WFEO).
