Declared on June 9, the date of approval of the Statute of Autonomy of La Rioja, and conceived as a commemorative and festive day that aims to highlight the identity and personality of the region.
On October 8, 1978, the 1st Day of La Rioja was celebrated in Nájera with an event of a markedly popular character and which claimed autonomy for the region, under the slogan "La Rioja begins to walk". The following editions took place in Haro, Calahorra and Logroño in the context of a pre-autonomy and identity claim.
Finally, June 9 was chosen as the date of the Autonomous Community, and an institutional commemorative ceremony was held annually in San Millán de la Cogolla.
