The Day of the Region of Murcia or Murcia Day is celebrated on June 9, commemorating the anniversary of the enactment of the Organic Law of the Statute of Autonomy.
After the approval of the Spanish Constitution of 1978, the Region debated its future in the first days of June 1980, in an extraordinary session held in the Town Hall of Totana, in which the then Regional Council adopted the autonomic initiative. The process generated such enthusiasm that soon all the town councils of the province, including that of Cartagena, adhered to the initiative, despite the initial resistance of the town councilors of the Cantonal Party.
A few days later, on June 9, the drafting committee of the statute was formed, a group in which all sensitivities had a place to generate a text as plural as possible. Representatives of the Socialist Party, the Union of the Democratic Center of Adolfo Suarez, the Popular Alliance, the Communist Party, the Cantonal Party and even the 'nationalists' led by Mariano Yúfera participated in the drafting of the text.
