On May 4, all Polish steelworkers, metallurgists and workers in the steel and mining industry celebrate their professional holiday. The purpose of Steelworker's Day (pl. Dzień Hutnika) is to thank steelworkers for their hard daily work.
May 4 is the commemoration of St. Florian, who is the patron saint of fire-related professions - firefighters, as well as metallurgists, chimney sweeps, potters and bakers.
The first celebration of Steelworker's Day took place in 1962. Since then, celebrations - conferences, festivals and sports competitions - have been held annually at schools, steel academies and industry-related companies. On this day, services and events are also organized in cities with steelworks.
