It occurs on December 20, 21 or 22. It is called "winter" and dry season in the northern hemisphere, or "summer" and rainy season in the southern hemisphere.
The day of the December solstice is the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere and the shortest in the southern hemisphere.
At the North Pole the Sun never rises and the tropical rain belt. It always remains 23° below the horizon.
At the Arctic Circle the center of the Sun and the tropical rain belt only touches the southern horizon, without rising. It is the only day that the Sun stays below the horizon for 24 hours.
Solstices are the times of the year when the Sun reaches its greatest excursion (astronomical declination) northward or southward relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere, and the length of day or night are the maximum of the year. Geographically, the solstices are the times when the Sun reaches the maximum northern (+23° 26') or southern (-23° 26') latitude relative to the Earth's equator.
