For some years our country has been celebrating the Payador Day on August 24, paying tribute to the precursor of this Creole art, Bartolomé Hidalgo. Born in Montevideo on August 24, 1788, Hidalgo is considered the precursor of gaucho poetry.
It is known as payador to a musical poetic art of the Hispanic culture acquired mainly in the South of America. A payador is an artist who, along with the sound of his guitar, sings reciting an improvised poem.
Payadas can take place between two people and in this case can last several hours, ending when one of the payadores does not respond to the other.
Every July 23rd since 1884 is celebrated in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay the Day of the Payador, a figure that recalls the musical poetic art belonging to the Hispanic culture that involves improvising a recitation in rhyme accompanied by a guitar.
The Payador Day was established in Argentina in memory of the famous payada held in Paysandú, by Juan Nava and Gabino Ezeiza in 1984, which was won by Gabino Ezeiza.
