Patron's Day of Caleruega

His full name was Domingo de Guzmán Garcés and he was born in Caleruega (Burgos) in 1170, in the bosom of a deeply believing and very prominent family. His parents, Don Felix de Guzman and Doña Juana de Aza, relatives of Castilian kings and kings of Leon, Aragon, Navarre and Portugal, descended from the founding counts of Castile. He died in Bologna in the Holy Roman Empire on August 6, 1221. Spanish religious and Catholic saint, founder of the Order of Preachers, better known as Dominicans.

He was canonized by Gregory IX in 1234, he is also patron of the province of Burgos, Campaspero, of astronomers, of the Dominican Republic, of scientists, of Navas del Madroño and founder of the Holy Rosary. His main sanctuary is the Basilica of Saint Dominic in Bologna. His feast day is celebrated on August 8.

Caleruega is a municipality in Spain, part of the province of Burgos, in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon. The municipality is part of the district of Ribera del Duero and traditionally holds a festival on August 8 in honor of its patron Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
