This date is a national holiday dedicated to the Colombian flag and to the commemoration of the Battle of Boyacá, the most important confrontation of Colombia's war of independence. The date was decreed by law 28 of February 16, 1925, with the approval of the Congress, by the then president of Colombia, Pedro Nel Ospina.
The origin of the current National Flag of Colombia is located in 1806, specifically on March 12, when the Precursor Francisco Miranda waved for the first time the yellow, blue and red tricolor aboard his sailing ship, or brigantine, Leandro, during his failed invasion of Coro (town of Venezuela). This flag was the same one that Miranda together with Lino de Clemente and José Sata y Bussy, presented to the Venezuelan Congress of 1811 to be adopted as the national insignia.
