In 1962, the Dominican Republic enacted Law 5807 which established April 5 as Journalist's Day, commemorating the birth of the first Dominican newspaper El Telégrafo Constitucional de Santo Domingo. Since then, this date is celebrated every year with a series of activities organized by the Dominican College of Journalists and some journalistic institutions and companies.
El Telégrafo Constitucional de Santo Domingo was founded in 1821. It comprised four pages and had a weekly output (every Thursday) and "disseminated decrees, provisions of the city councils, the deputations, the activity of trade, prices, naval operations, among others". Its founder and director was Antonio María Pineda, professor at the University of Santo Domingo. This newspaper ceased to circulate the same year it was founded, for economic and political reasons.
