The second week in August (9-15), Huesca celebrates its fiestas in honour of San Lorenzo, the city’s patron saint. The festivities begin at 12 noon on August 9 with the launching of the rocket from the balcony of the City Hall of Huesca, in the Plaza de la Catedral. The sound of a rocket being set off from the balcony of the Town Hall is the signal for the start of nine days of activity and fun, with music, folk groups and traditional dance, concerts, associations, religious events, sports, “vaquillas” (bullfights with young bulls) and a host of festive activities for young and old.
During the course of the festivities, a large number of historical, cultural and gastronomic traditions are linked, which led the Government of Aragon to declare them a Festival of Regional Interest in 2001 and the Government of Spain to declare them a Festival of National Interest in 2005.
