The date is celebrated in homage to the birth of the Argentine writer Leopoldo Lugones, in 1874.
Lugones was born on June 13, 1874 in Villa María del Río Seco, Córdoba and committed suicide on February 18, 1938 in a hotel in Tigre. It was from the Argentine Society of Writers that established the date of his birth as Writer's Day in Argentina.
