In 1895, “Listerine was marketed to dentists after studies showed that it was also good for killing germs found in the mouth,” the Listerine website explains. The website states that in 1914, Listerine was the first prescription product sold over the counter that could kill oral germs. The term Halitosis was invented by Listerine. The bacteria living in your mouth can cause chronic bad breath. It wasn’t until the 1920’s when Gerard Lambert of Listerine started really pushing the medical condition known as halitosis and began marketing it as a social faux-pas. Since then the battle against bad breath, which has been around for a millennia, has become a global fight.
Fresh breath is not only comfortable for the other person but also for ourselves. When our mouth doesn't have an unhealthy amount of bacteria it feels better. Brushing reduces bad breath.
Just as dry mouth causes bad bacteria to gain the upper hand, keeping your mouth moist with natural saliva is a great way to keep the healthy bacteria alive and reduce the population of bacteria that cause the bad breath problem in the first place.
