In early Christian times, reconciliation was a public affair, and people had to recite their sins in front of their entire community. In medieval times, reconciliation took its modern-day form as people appealed for forgiveness directly to a religious official, although punishments remained severe.
It is a part of salvation. Reconciliation is the end of the estrangement, caused by original sin, between God and his people. John Calvin describes reconciliation as the peace between humanity and God that results from atoning for religious sin.
