Mocha refers to both a type of coffee bean and the chocolate espresso drink. Mochas are just flavored lattes. The Ottoman Turks invented caffe mocha in the 1500s. The name is derived from the city of Mocha, Yemen, which was one of the centres of early coffee trade. From Yemen, the drinking of coffee and trading of coffee beans spread throughout the Arabian peninsula, and later, beyond Arabia to Europe. Like latte, the name is commonly shortened to just mocha. Creamy, chocolatey beverages have predated the American mocha for at least 200 years.
September 29th is US Mocha Day. It’s also National Coffee Day, celebrating mocha’s parents — coffee.
