Cobbler refers to a variety of dishes, particularly in the United Kingdom and United States, consisting of a fruit or savory filling poured into a large baking dish and covered with a batter, biscuit, or scone (in England) before being baked. Fruit cobblers can be made with almost any fruit, singly or in combination. A cobbler is like a pie filling, but without the bottom crust and it is usually much thicker, or higher or taller, than a pie. The cobbler takes its name from the biscuit dough crust on top – it is rough looking or 'cobbled. ' It originated in the U.S. sometime in the early to mid 19th century. A Cobbler is also a drink, which probably predates the fruit cobbler pie.
